The Vocational Truck Industry: A View from the Manufacturing Floor
By: Ryan Schatti
Business Development Manager: Transway Systems
The vocational truck industry has always been practical by nature. Equipment either does the job, or it doesn’t, and there’s not much patience for anything in between. That mindset hasn’t changed, but the way we design, build, and deliver equipment has shifted noticeably in just the last few years.
Supply chain disruptions forced a lot of uncomfortable adjustments. Parts that were once easy to source suddenly weren’t, lead times stretched, and familiar designs had to be revisited. For manufacturers, that meant rolling up our sleeves and figuring things out in real time by reworking systems, qualifying new suppliers, and finding solutions that kept trucks working without cutting corners. Reliability still mattered most. We just had to get there a different way.
Customer expectations have evolved as well. Technology has become part of nearly every conversation. Telematics, diagnostics, and data tracking are no longer viewed as add-ons, but tools that help fleets stay ahead of downtime and maintenance issues.
From a manufacturing standpoint, the challenge is making sure those systems actually belong on vocational equipment. If technology can’t stand up to dirt, vibration, weather, and long days in the field, it doesn’t add value. It adds problems. Inside the shop, things don’t stand still for long. Skilled trades are still at the heart of what we do, but smarter layouts, modular builds, and cleaner processes are helping our teams work more efficiently and deliver consistent results. With material costs moving all over the place, mistakes add up fast. That reality has forced us to rethink how work moves through the shop and tighten things up around a one-touch approach.
Looking ahead, the path forward isn’t complicated. The manufacturers who will succeed are the ones who stay adaptable, listen closely, and keep their focus on real-world performance. The vocational truck industry has never been about hype. It’s about building equipment people can rely on, day in and day out, and that hasn’t changed.
